This madam butterfly 6 full 7 piece place settings of old ivory syracuse china by onadaga pottery co. Is in like new condition. It was manufactured some time between 1949 and 1966 but appears to have been unused with absolutely no utensil marks. It was found in a china cabinet at an estate sale, thoughtfully displayed, in the home of a 92 year old woman. There are other iterations of this exact pattern that have a thin brown or gold boarder at the rims but this version is without either. The pattern has a fantastic retro look being’shadowtone’ which is the trade name for syracuse china’s signature stencil airbrush technique developed in the early 20th century, initially called syratone, in making china for railroad dining cars. The colors are best described as a very pink peach color with brown on an ivory base. They also preform well in the microwave. The test preformed was a coffee cup in the microwave filled with water on high for 30 seconds. The handle and the rim of the cup stayed cool to the touch. The hot water transferred heat only to the area of the cup it touched. The same test preformed with a contemporary microwave safe coffee cup yielded the same result. Most of the pieces in the set do not have the maker’s mark. Each 7 piece place setting consists of: 1 dinner plate, 1 salad plate, 1 bread & butter plate, 1 berry bowl, 1 rim soup bowl, 1 coffee cup and 1 saucer. Measurements are as follows. Dinner plate 9.75 diameter. Salad plate 8 diameter. Bread & butter 6.25 diameter. Berry bowl 5″ diameter and 1″ high. Rim soup bowl 9″ diameter and 1.25″ high with a 1.5 rim (very shallow soup bowl).
